Highly Capable Services Announcement
Highly Capable Services AnnouncementThe Dieringer School District has a long-standing tradition of providing educational opportunities designed to meet the needs of the individual student. With the definition of basic education expanded to include highly capable services, students identified as highly capable will be provided access to the basic education program with opportunities for accelerated learning and instructional enhancements. The Dieringer School District Highly Capable services seek to identify the most highly capable students in our district. Highly Capable students are students who perform or show potential for performing at significantly advanced academic levels when compared with others of their age, experiences, or environments.

Referrals for consideration of students currently in kindergarten through 8th grade can be made by either parents, guardians, community members or teachers. Referral packets are available online or in the school offices. The referral packet includes a parent permission to administer highly capable testing. If you are a parent and wish to refer a student, please complete the
Highly Capable Parent Referral Form available on our website.
If you are a teacher and wish to refer a student, please complete the Highly Capable
Teacher Referral Form
on our website.

Please complete your form no later than May 28, 2021.
The multidisciplinary committee will meet to review all on-time referral forms, compile data and determine students who are candidates for follow up assessments. Notification of eligibility to participate in testing will be sent to you via email by June 4, 2021. Testing will be held the week of June 7, 2021. Appointments will be scheduled for your student to take the tests at their school. All safety procedures will be followed during testing. If you have any questions, please contact the District Office (253) 862-2537.

The Multidisciplinary Committee will then reconvene for the purpose of reviewing the student’s status in regard to state/district multiple objective criteria in order to determine which applicants are candidates for Highly Capable programming. Selection is based on review of recommendations, standardized test scores, parent and teacher input, student performance and work samples, and previous program experience. Standardized test scores include but are not limited to: cognitive abilities assessments, district achievement data, and state achievement data and results of standardized measures of learning characteristics associated with highly capable students. A single assessment score or indicator will not prevent a student’s selection for the Highly Capable Program. All referred students will be notified of their selection status by the week of June 21, 2021.

Parents or guardians may appeal the decision of the multidisciplinary team due to information that was not available at the time of selection (ex. missing assessment scores) by completing an appeal form within ten days of receiving their selection status letter.
